Windows 11, version 24H2: The Compatibility Conundrum

You know that frustrating moment when your computer stubbornly refuses to install the latest version of Windows? Kind of like when you realize you’ve paid a fortune for your Windows license while Linux is free. Well, buckle up, because Windows 11 version 24H2 seems determined to play diva with certain ASUS devices and Ubisoft games.

The BSOD Blues

Imagine this scenario:

  • You have an ASUS laptop
  • You think to yourself, “Alright, let’s do this, I’m upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2!”
  • Your screen turns blue with a lovely error message
  • Poof, no more update, back to square one

That’s what we call having the BSOD blues (Blue Screen Of Death for the initiated). Microsoft and ASUS put their heads together and identified a hardware compatibility issue on these models. As a result, the update has been blocked via Windows Update. You can still attempt a manual installation, but at your own risk!

Ubisoft Caught in the Storm

As if that weren’t enough, some Ubisoft games have decided to have an existential crisis under Windows 11 version 24H2. On the menu:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Origins, and Odyssey freezing up
  • Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora playing hide-and-seek
  • Black screens worthy of a horror movie

Ubisoft released a Band-Aid for Star Wars Outlaws, but there’s no guarantee the game won’t act up. Once again, Microsoft has brought out the anti-update shield to avoid catastrophe.

Keep Calm and Wait for the Patch

So, what do you do if you’re in this mess? Conventional wisdom (and Microsoft) recommends:

  1. Don’t force the update manually (haven’t you been told that patience is a virtue?)
  2. If your game crashes, use the Task Manager to kill it cleanly (Ctrl+Shift+Esc will be your best friend)
  3. Keep calm and wait for the salvation patch

Microsoft and its partners are on the case to resolve these little hiccups. Until then, you’ll have to grin and bear it and face the facts: even the great Windows 11, for which you paid top dollar, has its teenage tantrums. But don’t worry, it’ll pass!

In the meantime, you can always dust off your old PC running Linux. At least that one’s free and won’t let you down over a compatibility issue.
